Apraxia
Your child may have difficulties expressing himself or herself, even if he or she
understands what is said. The tongue, lips, jaws and palate must work together to
produce speech.
If your child has difficulty forming words, he or she may have Childhood
Apraxia of Speech (CAS).
Therapists at Polinsky Medical Rehabilitation Center help your child overcome the
challenges of this condition, enabling him or her to produce the correct sounds,
syllables and words.
We will evaluate your child’s speaking skills, including examinations of the tongue,
lips, jaw and respiratory system. You’ll be able to work with our experienced team
of speech therapists who will develop a plan specifically for your child. This may
include practice, repetition, rhythm and melody.
A common therapy session may use a nursery rhyme or favorite song. The brain accesses
language differently through music – and it’s fun. Repetition is very important,
as therapists train a child to use different sound combinations, much like a pianist
must train his fingers to play a composition.
