Autism Spectrum Disorder
More and more parents are concerned about autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This
group of related brain-based disorders affects a child’s behavior as well as social
and communication skills.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, autism spectrum disorders include
three of five disorders known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs): autistic
disorder, Asperger syndrome and PDD-not otherwise specified.
Autism spectrum disorders are lifelong conditions with no known cure. However, a
child can progress developmentally and learn new skills, according to the pediatric
academy. Some children may improve so much that they no longer meet the criteria
for ASD, although milder symptoms may often persist.
Polinsky Medical Rehabilitation Center therapists work together to craft a treatment
plan that answers your questions and helps your child and your family.
Autism encompasses a wide spectrum of symptoms. Our evaluations may include assessment
of:
- Communication
- Behavioral difficulties
- Sensory processing
- Speech and language
- Motor skills
- Learning ability
- Thinking abilities
A challenging condition, the right therapy will improve the symptoms of autism spectrum
disorders, enabling a better life for your child and your family.
Polinsky therapists may work on a child’s motor planning or sequencing, which allows
a child to organize herself in the world. Therapists may also tap into a child’s
sense of touch, sight or hearing using our sensory integration room, helping her
focus for a short time – and breaking into her world.
A child may not be talking, so we may work on sign language, gestures and pictures
to help him communicate. For others, therapy will include making eye contact, reading
nonverbal signals, asking and answering questions, and making sense of ordinary
social situations.
